Mabon has passed and next in line marking the end and beginning of the Wheel of the Year is Samhain. At time to honor the animals and our ancestors, Samhain is widely known for being the "most popular" wiccan holiday. It certainly is my favorite, next to Yule, for reasons even I don't fully understand. Something about that change in the air, I'm sure a few of you know what I mean- the essence of october (hmm..I think I'll make an incense called that, actually!), the added energy, the way you can almost sense- physically, spiritually, and mentally,- the thinness of the veil.

I won't be calling on my ancestors, except for my grandfather. I am English, 50% Italian, and Israeli. Regarding my English family, we've been in the country since at least the 1600s. They we're all statesmen/government officials. My last name is actually on the constitution, it was signed by my great uncle. We have a town named after us. My point is, they don't strike me as the kind of people that would've been okay with witchcraft. My understanding is that some of them would have even had the authority to burn witches. So even if they're okay with it now in the afterlife, I don't want to bring them back and have them feel any shame or embarrassment, if that makes sense. I think the best way for me to honor them is to simply let them rest in peace.

Tarot Spread of the Week - The Dark Self

In honor of the fall equinox and honoring the Dark Goddess, I thought a tarot spread that offers a look into the dark self was appropriate. I really recommend the forum, too. They have some GREAT spreads! I'll be posting more along the way, including some from my books and some of my own.
I did this with a double card deck- As Above, So Below. The As Above typically meaning Available Energy/Energy on the Spiritual Plane and So Below typically representing How the Energy is Being Used or Manifested/Energy on the Physical Plane.

Purification! When your space needs a super-charged cleansing.

So we have an in-home demon. It's with us for life,  nothing we can do about it (and don't ask about the circumstances under which it is here, for the are not mine therefore I am not permitted to speak of them.)  I've becoming more and more aware of him, and he's also been making himself more apparent (stronger this time of year). And anyways, my very miserable, mean, [think original 'grumpy cat'] 10 year old cat who hides most of the time upstairs has refused to stay up there, and so has been downstairs tormenting the other felines and making my life hell (gotta love him). I tried to bring him to the steps, and he would freak out. I already had sensed the presence in the hallway before this happened..

So, finally, I decided to smudge and purify the upstairs (I'm not permitted to do the whole house, lest I get on the bad side of a dark entity). As soon as I finish? He ran right back upstairs! After being down here a week!

 Seeing as how this worked on the effects of an outright demonic presence (but note I wasn't trying to get rid of him, only protect the upstairs and cleanse it of his energy), I'm sharing these steps today for you to use anytime you feel your area needs the ultimate cleansing.

Here's what I did:

*Sage smudge stick
*Cauldron
*Charcoal tablet
*Loose Excorcism/purification incense/powder
*Sea Salt

I don't quite remember what all I included in my Exorcism incense, but here's the rough draft-
*Frankenscense
*Sandlewood
*Rosemary
*Sea Salt
*Mugwort
*St. Johns Wort
*Angelica Root

-First I lit the incense in the center of the room he primarily spends his time in and let it burn.

-Second, I went around the perimeter of the upstairs rooms/hallways and across the doorways with sea salt (sea salt is the ULTIMATE purifying agent, it cannot be contaminated. This is why one of m favorite stones- Selenite - is known to be self cleansing). I also sprinkled some of the Exorcism powder across the entrance of each room and the top of the steps.

-Next, I went the perimeter with the sage stick.

-After that, I threw in some more incense and held it in the center of each room.

-Finally, I took the cauldron into the hallway, held it in the air, closed my eyes, visualized myself sending out pure white light to fill the area, and recited (as it came to me):

"By earth, by fire, by air, by sea,
By the power of the God and Goddess which burns within me,
I purify this sacred space, and send all negative energies back to their place."

Done! Collected my things, went downstairs, passing that cat (who 'meowed' as he flew by me) on the way!

Seeing as how Frankenscence is no longer down here being a tyrant after dealing with his misery for a week (I really do love that cat) I would say it was not only effective, but immediately so.  Good luck!

Inanna’s Journey to the Underworld Ritual

This ritual is dedicated to making an inner journey, just as Inanna stripped away her finery and symbols of queenship in her descent to the underworld. (Ritual is adapted from Monaghan’s The Goddess Path.)

The altar:

·         Use a purple or black altar cloth, and make the room as dark as possible.

·         Decorate with lapis lazuli, crystals, figs, roses, and gold-colored objects.

·         Dates can represent earth, frankincense is stationed at air, a black candle represents the darkness of the underworld at fire, and beer can be used in the place of water.

·         At spirit, place a rose.

·         Wear a shawl over your head, and carry with you the symbols of whatever power you are to strip away

·         Also on the altar place a star of some sort, to represent Inanna.

Cast the circle, invoking Inanna and all the others who have traveled to the underworld and returned to the earth.

Walk counter-clockwise around the circle seven times to represent Inanna’s descent into the underworld.

Take the symbol of what is to be stripped away, meditating on the power of it in your life and experiencing the loss fully. Place it on the altar, turning it over or otherwise covering it.

 Take off the shawl and place it next to the altar, to represent the nakedness of Inanna when she arrived at Ereshkigal’s throne.

 Sit for several minutes silently, to represent Inanna’s time as a corpse. Meditate on yourself, stripped of all that seemed to protect you.

When you feel ready, imagine that the creatures sent by Enki have arrived to save you. Imagine that you are being brought back to life and freed. Feel the energy filling you. Walk clockwise seven times to represent your return to the earth. Pick up the symbol of Inanna from the altar and hold it tightly, to represent the inner strength that sustained you once the other trappings were stripped away.

I have seen the piercing eyes of the dark goddess as she stands naked in the silent shadows, planting the seeds of vision. Reached into the arms of my deepest sorrow and looked into the eyes of death. Yet the world dance did not cease. By the light of the waning moon, I have seen the faces of the shining ones and, taking the sword of wisdom, cut the cords that bind me. Armed only with love I have entered the healing power of the moon, drawing it down around me to enter the sacred womb of the dark goddess. And turning pain into power, I have returned.

A gracious name may my known and unknown goddess announce!

Pure food have I not eaten,

Clear water have I not drunk.

An offense against my god I have unwittingly committed.

A transgression against my goddess I have unwittingly done.

0 Lord, my sins are many, great are my iniquities!

My god, my sins are many, great are my iniquities! . . .

The sin, which I have committed, I know not.

The iniquity, which I have done, I know not.

The offense, which I have committed, I know not.

The transgression I have done, I know not.

The lord, in the anger of his heart, hath looked upon me.

The god, in the wrath of his heart, hath visited me.

The goddess hath become angry with me, and hath grievously stricken me.

The known or unknown god hath straitened me.

The known or unknown goddess hath brought affliction upon me.

I sought for help, but no one taketh my hand.

I wept, but no one came to my side.

I lamented, but no one hearkens to me.

I am afflicted, I am overcome, I cannot look up.

Unto my merciful god I turn, I make supplication.

How long, my goddess, until thy face be turned toward me?
